Terry taught in Rhyl and Connah’s Quay before being appointed Deputy Head at Deeside High School.
He was subsequently seconded to Clwyd Local Education Authority as an advisor and then Area Education Officer for all the high schools based in Flintshire.
Following local government reorganisation Terry became the manager of the joint Inspection / Advice Service (Curriculum Support Services) that served the Unitary Authorities in North East Wales.
Following retirement from Flintshire LA, as a qualified Independent Registered Inspector for Estyn, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Schools in Wales, Terry went on to lead thirty inspections of high schools. In this respect Terry has a clear understanding of what an outstanding school looks like and what it takes to become ‘excellent’. He brings a huge amount of inspection experience with him.
Terry has several years first-hand experience of being a school governor with John Summers High School and Queensferry Primary School. He was also a member of the Interim Executive Board (IEB) which supported St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School out of ‘special measures’ and helped to lay the foundation for future school improvement.
Until recently Terry was Chair of Governors Wales, the organisation which promotes excellent school governance across Wales, a voluntary post he held for five years. He still chairs the Flintshire Governors Association, which facilitates the sharing of good practice amongst governing bodies.
Terry says, “Hopefully I can bring a perspective that will both support and challenge the school leadership team and IEB so that we work effectively as a team. Ultimately, we must ensure that the school is a place where every student who has the ability, ambition and work ethic can succeed, whatever success means for them.”
